Why Mansfield Works
The Mansfield-Ontario Metal Center is the lowest cost plant in GM. The workers are the model for the Teamwork initiative within GM and they have the most Competitive Operating Agreement within GM.

If the reason for closing Mansfield is:
Shipping costs are higher from Mansfield than at other Stamping Plants: Shipping may be higher but production costs are lower:

  • Mansfield makes parts for $1,707 per ton.

  • Flint makes parts for $2,076 per ton.
  • Mansfield is $369 less per ton

  • Parma makes parts for $2,295 per ton.
  • Mansfield is $588 less per ton

  • Indianapolis makes parts for $2,655 per ton.
  • Mansfield is $948 less per ton

  • Pontiac makes parts for $4,042 per ton.
  • Mansfield is $2335 less per ton

  • Mansfield is $9225 cheaper than Flint per truck load and $46,125 by rail

  • Mansfield is $14,700 cheaper than Parma per truck load $73,500 by rail

  • Mansfield is $23,700 cheaper than Indianapolis per truck load $118,500

  • Mansfield is $58,375 cheaper than Pontiac per truck load $291,875

  • One rail car normally equals 5 trucks.

  • A rail car shipping costs between $1800 and $2500 depending on the destination.

  • Truck costs varies between $500 and $800 for reg. and more if exclusive or premium.
  •
  • We ship by rail to Fairfax, Wentzville, Arlington,

  • We ship by truck to Orion, Hamtramack, Lansing, Flint, Pontiac and Fort Wayne

If the reason is:
Rail shipping: Mansfield has more rail car spaces than any other plant almost half are covered up and could be easily uncovered.

If the reason is:
Mansfield’s product line: Plants could send their dies to Mansfield. We can run the dies and repair them. We currently repair dies for Parma now.

If the reason is:
Metal Assembly capacity: We have more open space available than the other plants. Mansfield’s Metal Assembly has new electrical feeds throughout. In the electrical substations, new switch gear has been installed within the last ten years. So there is definitely the capacity to run everything in Mansfield.

Mansfield cost includes Laid off workers without that advantage we are better than Marion. The Figures used above are May 2009 year to date cost per ton given by GM
